Fire Rated Mezzanine Floor Installation in Bradford

Leeds based Avanta UK Ltd successfully tendered for a large fire rated mezzanine floor installation in Bradford for a leading packaging company. The new mezzanine floor measures 254 square metres (21 x 12.1m) with a finished floor level of some 5.133 metres to match an existing floor.

The client required the minimum number of columns and therefore we designed the floor with a central column which gave a clear span in one direction of 11.2m. The wide span column grid offers a loading of 7.4K/n per m/2 (750Kgs pallets) classed as medium use.
The works also included boxing in columns and fitting a suspended ceiling to the under side of the mezzanine to give the client a 1 hour fire protection as staff are to be working on the floor and one edge measured in excess of 20m.

The mezzanine deck was constructed using 38mm thick high density chipboard and finished with 2 coats of anti slip epoxy varnish. Access for pallets is via 2 bespoke pallet gates that can operate where overhead room is restricted. Additional works carried out by Avanta included: -

  • The supply and installation of a flexible wall partition to the full height of the eaves with 1 opening for the 2 pallet gates
  • 14 linear metres of handrail with integral kicker was installed in front of the flexible wall partition
  • The relocation of an existing pallet gate and electric roller shutter door
  • Supply and install new steel work to support 2 proposed electric shutter doors
  • Create a new opening in block wall for access to the floor.
  • Handling of full building regulations application

To suit the client the mezzanine floor was installed over 1 weekend and all subsequent works were carried out on nights.
