In 1996, businessman Phil Burgan, set up Maria Mallaband Nursing Homes with Maria Twarowski, based at Cleckheaton, with their offices located within the loft conversion of their first premises – Ashcroft Nursing Home. The business quickly grew and by early 2004 it was clear that their head office premises were no longer large enough to cope with the businesses growing needs, causing the Chairman to look for larger premises.
